Baker Institute for Animal Health
There have been many faculty in the Institute over the years who have retired or have moved on to other positions. Archival pages are provided that give a brief summary of the research done in their laboratories during their time at the Baker Institute. The Institute has been privileged to have had these individuals as part of our professional staff, and acknowledge the many contributions they made to animal research.
Dr. Gustavo Aguirre, former Institute Director (1992-1994) and Caspary Professor of Ophthalmology (1992-2004), is now Professor of Medical Genetics and Ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Max J. Appel, former Asst. Professor (1967-1970), Assoc. Professor (1970-1976), and Professor of Virology (1976-1997), is now a Professor Emeritus, and has moved out of the Ithaca area.
Dr. Robin Bell, former Asst. Professor (1979-1984), Assoc. Professor (1984-1990), and Professor of Immunology (1990-2004), retired in March 2004 and continues to reside in the Ithaca area.
Dr. Susan Bliss, former Research Associate (2001-2006, Appleton Lab), Senior Research Associate (faculty 2007-2010). Dr. Bliss has left Cornell and is now residing in New Hampshire.
Dr. Nancy Burton-Wurster started at the Baker Institute as a Postdoctoral Associate in 1981, and became faculty in 1985 as a Senior Research Associate. She held this position until her death in 2006. Dr. Burton-Wurster was a long time colleague of Dr. George Lust and the research projects they worked on together are available from his web site.
Dr. Leland Carmichael, former Asst. Professor (1963-1965), Assoc. Professor (1965-1969), and John M. Olin Professor of Virology (1969-1997), is now the John M. Olin Professor, Emeritus at the Baker Institute. Dr. Carmichael also served as Acting Institute Director (1974-1976) and Institute Director (1991-1993).
Dr. George Lust, former Asst. Professor of Biochemistry (1968-1973), Assoc. Professor of Biochemistry (1973-1983), and Professor of Physiological Chemistry (1983-2010), is now an Emeritus Professor at the Baker Institute.
Dr. James MacLeod, former Asst. Professor (1992-1999) and Assoc. Professor (1999-2004) of Molecular Genetics, is now the John S. Elizabeth Knight Chair in Equine Veterinary Science, a faculty position at the Gluck Equine Research Center at the University of Kentucky.
Dr. Susana Mendez, former Asst. Professor (2006 - 2011) of Microbiology, is now a Scientific Review Officer at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Dr. Douglas McGregor, is now an Emeritus Professor at the Baker Institute. Dr. McGregor also served as Institute Director (1976-1991) and head of the Leadership Program (2007-2011).
Dr. Ben E. Sheffy, former Asst. Professor (1954-1957), Assoc. Professor (1957-1961), and Caspary Professor of Nutrition (1961-1985). Dr. Sheffy retired in 1985 and is now the Caspary Professor of Nutrition, Emeritus. Dr. Sheffy also served as Acting Institute Director (1966-1976).
Dr. Bettina Wagner, former Visiting Professor (2002-2004) and Senior Research Associate (2004-2006), is currently an Assistant Professor of Immunology in the Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University.
